Rational Functions Practice

Goals: 
  • Determine the parts of a rational function
    • Y intercept
      • plug in x = 0 into given function
    • X intercepts
      • determine the root(s) of the numerator
    • Holes 
      • Does the numerator and denominator share a common factor that contains a variable?
        • If yes, then the root of the cancelled term is the x coordinate of the hole of the rational function
        • If yes, then the y coordinate of the hole of the rational function can be found by replacing root of canceled term into the simplified rational function
  • Horizontal Asymptote
    • Is the rational function BOTTOM heavy?  (degree in denominator is larger than numerator)
      • If Yes, then y = 0 is horizontal asymptote
    • Is the rational function TOP heavy?  (degree in denominator is smaller than numerator)
      • If Yes, then NO horizontal asymptote
    • Does the rational function have functions in the numerator and denominator of equal degree?
      • If Yes, then the horizontal asymptote is equal to the ratio of the lead coefficients
  • Vertical Asymptote(s)
    • determine the roots of the denominator
