Notes & Essential Questions

Goal: Naming and Describing Geometric Objects Properly

  • Do you understand the different methods of using two capital letters to define distance and geometric objects?
  • Do you understand the most important features of a ray?
  • Do you understand what two capital letters without a symbol above it means in geometry?
  • Which direction must the arrow point when naming a ray?
  • Which of the following geometric objects can be named by a single lower case letter (typically in italic or in cursive)?
    • ray
    • line
    • line segment
  • One of the AB's is INCORRECT, do you know which?

  • TRUE or FALSE Capital Letters are used to name points
  • TRUE or FALSE Coordinate pairs are used to name points and locate them on the coordinate plane
  • TRUE or FALSE Coordinate triple are used to name points and locate them in space
  • Do you know the difference in the notations for a line segment, a ray, and a line?
  • Do you know which of the following can be ONLY have a particular letter to start the name of the object?
    • line
    • ray
    • line segment
  • Do you understand the difference between a point being between two points on a line segment and a point bisecting a line segment?
  • How can you denote congruence of line segments?

  • The two important features of a ray are its endpoint and its direction
  • Can you determine which of the slides to the left have two rays that are really the same ray?
  • Can you determine which slide shows two rays that have only an endpoint in common?
  • Can you determine which slide has an example of two rays that are called OPPOSITE rays?
  • Can you determine which slide has two rays that form a line?

  • How many ways can you name a plane?
    • There are TWO ways to name a plane
    • Method One: Use any three non-collinear points that lie on the desired plane
    • Method Two: IF there is a SINGLE BOLD or CURSIVE letter on the plane, but does not name a POINT, then that plane can be named by a single letter
  • Can you determine a group of four or more points that are coplanar?
  • Can you name three points that are collinear, but not uniquely coplanar?
  • Can you determine a group of exactly three points that are coplanar?
  • Name the only line segment that lies in two planes
  • Name the point(s) that lies on more than two DRAWN line segments in the figure?
